Propellers for RC planes in a range of sizes, pitches and materials.
RC plane propellers are essential components of fixed-wing remote control aircraft, responsible for generating thrust and propelling the plane forward. They come in various shapes, sizes, and materials to suit different types of RC planes and flying applications. Understanding propellers is crucial for optimising flight performance, efficiency, and safety.
Key Aspects of RC Airplane Propellers
Most of RC plane terminology is taken directly from the life-size air industry, with minor differences. When it comes to the RC plane propellers themselves, there are four things you need to focus on when choosing the right component of this kind for your RC vehicle.
- Diameter: The distance across the circle formed by the tips of the propeller blades. It is usually measured in inches (e.g., 10x6 prop means a 10-inch diameter with a 6-inch pitch).
- Pitch: The theoretical distance the propeller would advance in one revolution if it were moving through a solid medium. A higher pitch propeller provides more forward speed but may require more power.
- Blade Count: Propellers can have 2, 3, 4, or more blades. The number of blades affects thrust efficiency and noise levels.
- Rotation: Propellers are designed to rotate clockwise (CW) or counterclockwise (CCW) as viewed from the front of the plane (tractor or pusher configuration).
How Do RC Plane Propellers Work?
We’ve already established that RC propellers generate thrust in remote-controlled planes, much like life-size propellers do in regular planes. They serve to push the plane forward while in the air. But how exactly do they do that?
Propellers spin around at rapid speeds to generate rotary motion from your RC plane’s engine. That motion is then converted into a swirling splitstream that allows the propeller to push the plane forward.
Not all RC propellers are created equal, though. One of the key elements that affects the way your propeller works is its size. A larger diameter propeller generally provides more thrust but might require a more powerful motor and could decrease flight duration.
This doesn’t mean that you can just take any RC plane and stick a large propeller onto it to give it more power. Different planes and motors have specific propeller size recommendations, typically provided by the manufacturer. If you fail to follow these guidelines, you may end up with a plane that’s unable to take flight. In the worst-case scenario, it can even get damaged as you try to take off.
What Are RC Plane Propellers Made Of?
When looking for the right RC propeller to buy for your plane, one of the key things to think about is the material used in its production. It’s a crucial factor that affects their durability and effectiveness.
Match the propeller to your model. If you have a low-end, beginner RC plane, then getting a carbon fibre propeller might be a bit of an overkill. Here are the three most common materials RC plane propellers are made of:
- Plastic: Most entry-level and foam RC planes come with plastic propellers. They are lightweight and generally suitable for beginner pilots.
- Composite: These propellers combine plastic with other materials to enhance strength and performance.
- Carbon Fibre: High-performance and precision-oriented RC planes often use carbon fibre propellers due to their lightweight and stiffness, which reduces vibration and improves efficiency.
Get RC Propellers From Reliable Manufacturers From AT Models
At AT Models, we don’t just sell RC vehicles and spare parts. We are passionate hobbyists, just like yourself, who personally test and review each and every piece of equipment we put up for sale.
Buying from a trusted provider is particularly important when it comes to the different detachable parts of RC planes, such as propellers. Faulty elements added onto your plane can result in damaging your aircraft, which is definitely something you want to avoid.
