RC Ducted EDF Fan

RC ducted fans, also known as EDFs (Electric Ducted Fans), are a type of propulsion system used in remote control aircraft. Unlike conventional propellers that have an exposed rotating blade, ducted fans encase the propeller in a cylindrical shroud, often referred to as a duct. This design provides several benefits, making them popular in certain types of RC aircraft, especially jets.

RC Plane Ducted Fan Propulsion, Explained

Using a brushless electric motor that’s attached to a fan impeller with multiple blades, RC planes with ducted fans propel the plane forward. The motor is used to spin the impeller at incredibly high RPMs, which is what allows the impeller to draw air in to push it out through a cylindrical thrust duct and then out the back of the aircraft. Thanks to this duct, the airflow is guided and accelerated, i.e. the reason why EDF planes are able to achieve such high speeds and manoeuvrability.

Electric ducted fans come in various sizes. Micro jets use the smallest EDFs with tiny, 30mm diameters, whereas some of the largest models out there might require fans with diameters well over 120mm. When buying spare EDFs for your model jet, you should always double-check with your plane’s instruction manual or its manufacturer’s website for the recommended EDF size.

It’s worth noting that while electric ducted fans can make your jets faster and more capable of pulling off complicated tricks, they use up significantly more power than propeller-based planes. This in hand, often results in shorter flight times and reduced battery life.

What RC Planes USE EDFs?

RC ducted fan systems are commonly used in models that replicate jet aircraft. The shrouded fan gives the model a more realistic jet-like appearance, especially when viewed from a distance. They also produce a loud, satisfying sound that resembles what an actual jet engine would sound like, adding a degree of realism to your RC flying experience.

It’s important to note that while EDF fans work great in RC jets, it’s not recommended to use them in most of the slower aeroplane models, such as trainer RC planes or other scale propeller planes. They’re most commonly used in scale model jets, where attention to detail and realistic appearance are essential. With that being said, you can apply an EDF fan to a non-scale model, as long as it is a jet-type plane.

Who Are RC Plane Ducted Fan Models For?

If you’re an experienced RC jet enthusiast and want to take your hobby to the next level by expanding your plane’s capacity to perform aerobatics and fly at incredibly high speeds, then you might want to consider getting yourself some electric ducted fans to use with your jet. They will greatly enhance your flight experience, allowing you to try out new tricks and absolutely dominate the skies.

We wouldn’t recommend for beginners to start their RC journey with EDFs. This is because flying an RC ducted fan model, especially a high-speed jet, requires more experience and skill compared to slower-flying propeller aircraft. Diving straight into this propulsion system without getting a hang of the basics first can render your jet adventure short-lived, as it carries a significant risk of damaging your treasured plane.

Where to Buy RC Electric Ducted Fans

Shopping around for RC spare parts is always a challenge, regardless of whether you’re looking for electric ducted fans or something else. You might be tempted to buy second-hand parts from other sites. However, buying from unverified sellers always carries the risk of getting wrong or dysfunctional parts that will not work as intended.

This is why you should always buy your RC kits, parts, and other accessories from trustworthy, specialised suppliers, like AT Models. We’re RC vehicle enthusiasts, just like yourself. All of the products we sell have been thoroughly tested and vetted by our team of expert professionals, so they should suit your RC plane, as long as you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
