Getting your Nitro engine started

Frequently Asked Questions

Question - Do I need anything else to run my Nitro model ?

Answer -  Ready To Run cars and trucks are supplied with Radio control Transmitter and servos fully installed. To actually get the car running you will require Transmitter Batteries usually AA batteries and also receiver batteries for the reciever in the car you will also need a rechargeable Glow Plug igniter and  Fuel

Question - How long will the fuel last ?

Answer - In general most Nitro Cars will run around 10 to 15 minutes on a full tank of fuel

Question - How much fuel do I need ?

Answer - 1 litre of fuel should fill the tank approximately 10 to 15 times .

Question - What caused my spur gears to strip ?

Answer - The spur gear turns the drive train of the car and it can become stripped ( a flat spot on the gear shows missing teeth)  if the pinion gear does not have the correct mesh with the spur gear. The clutch bell housing needs to correctly mesh with the main gear.

Question - Why did the con rod break ?

Answer - The con rod can break by
- Revving the engine with the wheels off the ground
- Not enough fuel in the engine can jam the piston
- A Loose flywheel

Question - The wheels turn when I pull the pull start ?

Answer - If the wheels turn when you pull the pull start it is likely the clutch shoes have melted likely causes are
- Incorrect set up so that the brake is still on slightly when the throttle is in neutral
- The model or the wheels are held still while the engine is revving
- If the idle speed of the engine is too high.

Question - How do I get correct gear mesh?

Answer - Put a piece of paper between the spur gear and pinion gear as you tighten the motor mount screws. The piece of paper should be impossible to remove after the motor is completely tightened except by turning the spur gear to rotate the paper out of place.

Remove the paper and turn the spur gear with your finger to feel the amount of movement or "play" there is between the spur gear and the pinion gear. There should only be a small amount of play - this is the correct gear mesh. You MUST ensure that the motor mount screws are very tight  it is good practice to use lock tight to keep them in place.  A big crash could move the motor towards or away from the spur gear, stripping it.

Question - What caused the flywheel to wear away ?

Answer - A loose flywheel will  be worn away quickly over time.  Always check that the flywheel is tight before each run.

Question - How do I stop the engine from running ?

Answer - If you cover the exhaust hole the engine will turn off a second later.

Question - What fuel should I use ?

Answer - You should use a good quality fuel with a nitro content of 15/16% for breaking in the engine and general use.

Question - Can i use higher percentage nitro eg 25% ?

Answer - Higher nitro content increases the speed of the model but in turn also makes the engine run hotter it is also more expensive.
